The Murakamiverse, with its spatial, temporal, and geographic restriction of recognizable tropes to an intellectual property originating from one source, has more in common with the contained and idiosyncratic ctional universes of Marvel or DC than it does with the arbitrary benchmarks of a national literary tradition. Constructing and operating within what I term the Murakamiverse, the author utilizes fan service, genre conventions/parody, visual cues, and manipulation of narrative temporality that has traditionally been the domain of popular culture studies and in particular, comics studies. Murakami Haruki, Japan’s most widely translated and popular author, is known for his repetition of protagonists, motifs, and story arcs across his ctional novels and short stories, which extends to his non- ction and even personal interviews. ![]()
